Abimael Chavez-Hernandez
CWB Fellow in Residence (St. Louis)
Abimael is the Community Wealth Building Fellow with WEPOWER, in partnership with The Democracy Collaborative. As the son of immigrants from Mexico, he is familiar with the impacts wealth and policy can have on the collective wellbeing of marginalized communities. He is passionate about and brings deep experience in local, regional, and state advocacy to create more responsive governance systems and equitable economies.
Having done this work in California and Minnesota, he is excited to work with local partners and advocates in Saint Louis to build policies and systems that close the racial wealth gap and create responsive governance systems that enable all to thrive. In his previous work, he focused on tax and budget policies, as well as fines and fees policies, and public engagement in local contexts in the United States. Drawing from these diverse policy areas, as well as his background studying comparative policymaking, he is well equipped to understand the impacts of and the feasibility of diverse community wealth building strategies for Saint Louis.
He is hopeful that by addressing the intersection of democratic governance and economic equity long-lasting and sustainable changes can be made to foster stronger democracies and economic justice.
